Canterbury was once home to 200 shakers, living communally and in harmony with "the outside world". By 1900, young followers left the religious order in great numbers, finding the celibate and hardworking rural lifestyle isolating and difficult. Canterbury closed in 1995 and there are very few Shakers left. It is with their kind permission that we present this photograph.
